Quite good actually, just wield a totem axe and go wild with cyclone axe.

Actually, they're pretty dismal in PvP. One enchant strip ruins their day.

Awful in PvP, good in few places in PvE. Like Thirsty River for instance.

They're bad, except for farming some places in a Me/Mo 55 style.
In pvp they are a joke as a single debuff kills them, in pve sending a 60 armor toon in melee range is not a good idea, especially when true melee classes deal more damage and conditions.
Mesmers rock, but IW is just for fun...

Forget the totem axe, strap on a pair of +20 enchant daggers and pile on Feigned Neutrality and Dark Escape as soon as you get into melee range.
Now you've got +7 health regen, +80 armour (140 armour anybody? 150 with rogues) you move 25 percent faster than the kiters and take half damage when hit.
Just go IW, Dark Escape, FN, and laugh at the miserable attempts of your feeble enemies trying to hurt you. With the daggers I believe you get the chance to double hit no? I may be wrong there and getting double strike depends on Crit. strike tree...
BWAHAHAHAHAHAAAH
Oh! Wild Blow and Enchantement stripping hurts a lot. But no-one is making a IW mesmer Survivor that I know of... are they?

No, actually it depends on dagger mastery. you get 2% chance of double striking +2% x your dagger mastery level.
But with high illusion and shadow arts, there's little attributes points left for dagger mastery.

there is still a small double strike chance even at 0 dagger mastery.... very small chance.

Had fun running the forge with an IW sword build got a couple greens, but I also kept my hero monk very busy keeping me alive. I did solo a Warrior boss and got his green sword, but the funny thing is it was not a legit kill. He got stuck in the environment and would only use heal signet. So I chopped him down rather quickly Enchantment stripping is a killer so I always took an Illusion degeneration skill with me just in case. That way I could do something if IW did get stripped.

All my IW builds have Clumsiness, Images of Remorse, Conjure Phantasm, maybe Illusion of Pain. If I get stripped, I just switch to my staff and cast hexes untill IW recharges. And I use Heckets Rampage (12 points in Beast Mastery--no pet needed) as a speed buff (10 sec. for 5e.,can keep up all the time--ends if you use an attack skill, making it less use to a ranger but perfect for IW mesmer). All an IW build needs is IW, and maybe a speed buff, the rest can be your usual stuff. Imagined Burden is a must to run down kiters and escape if things get dangerous. And a pure Illusion Build is better overall, so that you don't have to stand up to tanks, which can be bad for your health. Of course for the fun factor, IW is great.

I'm not sure you know what an IW build is.

I played the entire NF campaign as IW. Used cruel 20% daggers with +5 energy inscription, BUT, that was back when feigned neutrality could be kept up... Provided a cover for your IW, and gave you a nice 80 armor +7 regen boost. I seem to remember cutting through NF like butter.
as for PvP, the short answer is no, they don't fare well anymore. Initial builds of an IW roughly 1 year ago were pretty decent in pvp, but not anymore.

IW just bad, PvE or PvP. Too vulnerable to enchant strip, and average damage.

Yeah, FN would be the ideal cover ench for IW, but sadly sins have no attack speed buff like flurry, so the DPS would be not enough for pvp enviroment.
